The North Eastern Ontario Advocacy Program serves the geographic area of the North-Eastern LHIN for individuals living with acquired brain injury, those with co-occurring diagnoses of addiction and/or mental health, and their caregivers.

The Online Concussion Support Group provides free support and education for individuals with concussions. The program is designed and facilitated by a Registered Social Worker with experience supporting those with trauma and concussion/brain injury. The groups are designed to provide a safe space generating connectedness and empowering participants to share their vulnerabilities. This allows them to experience challenges with their physical and mental well-being (anxiety, depression, changes in mood, difficulty coping with stress, PTSD, etc.) without fear of judgement.

OBIA’s Online Caregiver Support Group allows caregivers to connect with each other in a confidential setting, from the comfort of their own homes. Through sharing experiences, caregivers can exchange ideas and manage stress. Our completely virtual group is facilitated by a Registered Social Worker. Each group includes 6-8 people who meet online, once a week for 8 weeks.

OBIA’s Return to Work Program is designed to support employees with concussions and brain injuries and their employers through the return to work process. By offering tailored education programs and direct supports from a registered occupational therapist and registered social worker, the return to work program helps employers and employees navigate barriers and challenges that can arise in the return to work process.

OBIA’s Peer Support Program facilitates the relationship between individuals with lived experience (Mentors) and individuals who are seeking support during their journey with brain injury (Partners). The program is easily accessible to participants, via telephone or internet. Partners speak once per week, and their partnership lasts for one year.

Through a series of 6 modules, this website provides support and resources to caregivers and family members who are supporting a loved one with a brain injury. This website delivers beneficial knowledge for caregivers eager to learn more about acquired brain injury and how to care for those living with it. Learn more at: caregiverinfo.ca

The purpose of the Brain Injury Impact Study is to better understand the impacts of brain injury on those living in Ontario. The information is used to better inform government, insurers, researchers, and service providers on how people living with a brain injury can be better served.

Decisions affecting the brain injury community in Ontario should incorporate input from those with lived experience. The voices of survivors, family members, and caregivers accomplish this goal by having the opportunity to be heard through emails, phone calls, and surveys on current issues related to brain injury, and input is used to advocate for relevant policy changes in Ontario.
